Communications: Providing and Requesting Appropriate Feedback
Objectives:

  • Define feedback and understand its purpose in assessing, evaluating, and improving performance, behavior, or outcomes.
  • Recognize the importance of active listening when giving or receiving feedback and understand how it enhances understanding, reflection, and positive change.
  • Identify and describe different types of feedback, such as praise, corrective feedback, developmental feedback, and constructive feedback, and understand when each type is appropriate.
  • Understand best practices for providing feedback, including the role of empathy and emotional intelligence, delivering constructive and specific feedback, and avoiding generalizations.
  • Explain the considerations to keep in mind when requesting feedback, such as clearly articulating the purpose and scope, seeking feedback from knowledgeable individuals, timing the request appropriately, establishing trust, asking open-ended questions, being receptive to different perspectives, seeking clarification and examples, showing appreciation, actively listening, reflecting on the feedback received, and using it for personal and professional development.
