Simulation of a School-Store Startup
The presentation will show the structure and features of a classroom simulation of the startup of a school store or e-commerce business that covers topics and standards in many of the NBEA subject areas (e.g., Accounting, Communication, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Information Technology, Management, and Marketing).
Attendees of the session will see how the simulation can be used to exercise and assess student academic knowledge as well as communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.   Attendees of the session will understand the activities in each step of the process, their inter-relationships, and the business analysis methods that are applicable to each. Live demonstrations will be included that show how the analytic methods can be implemented using typical spreadsheet functionality.
The session will include a discussion of how the simulation can be implemented in a typical classroom as a small project for individuals or as a competition between teams. The session will conclude with a discussion of how the simulation could be improved and/or adapted to the startup of other types of businesses and through integration with real-world e-commerce systems.

In my aerospace career, I saw the potential of computer models for learning and co-founded Active Learning Labs to create interactive, competitive lessons. I live in central Maryland with my wife, also an educator
