Spotting and Reporting Consumer Scams
This 50-minute NBEA standards-based lesson helps students recognize, evaluate, and respond to common consumer scams. Students examine how scammers use urgency, emotion, authority, secrecy, and promises of financial gain to manipulate consumers. The lesson covers romance scams, phishing, smishing, identity theft, investment scams, imposter scams, and tech support scams.

Students view a short video resource, discuss scam warning signs, learn a simple SCAM checklist, and work in groups to analyze realistic scam scenarios. The learner handout includes vocabulary, guided response questions, scenario cards, and an exit quiz. The instructor version includes teacher notes, discussion prompts, YouTube and consumer-protection resources, assessment strategies, answer keys, and quiz explanations.
