Communication: Reflective Listening

Objective:

• Define reflective listening and explain its importance.
• Identify key techniques associated with active listening, including maintaining eye contact, nodding, offering verbal acknowledgments, and taking notes.
• Understand the relationship between active listening and reflective listening.
• Explain the importance of follow-up questions in reflective listening, including their ability to clarify the speaker's message, encourage deeper exploration, and demonstrate empathy.
• Differentiate between open-ended questions, closed-ended questions, probing questions, and clarifying questions.
• Understand the benefits of practicing empathy in business communication, including the ability to build trust and rapport with others.

National Standards: Complies with NBEA Communication 2023 Standard I.A.24 Use reflective listening by asking follow-up questions to practice empathy and increase clarity and understanding.
